Colin Johnston photography.
Enjoying and capturing the fascination of the natural world around us.
Into The Dark
Colours are subdued and contrast changes.
Our familiar world illuminated, by the sun, assumes a different ambience when the sun has gone and the only natural light is from the moon and the stars. Colours are subdued and contrast changes. The phases of the moon, our moving solar system, atmospheric phenomenon, and heavenly visitors such as meteors and comets, make the world after dark a place of endless enjoyment and exploration.
Landscape
I am happiest when outdoors and enjoying the natural world.
This is a portfolio of my favourite images which remind me of some great moments.
Sometimes capturing the experience is luck, but my most pleasing photographs are the result of planning and making the most of the conditions.
Wildlife
Photographing animals and birds in their natural habitat is a challenge that I enjoy.
The experience of waiting patiently and trying to capture the moment is the most fun, and if it results in a pleasing image then that is a bonus.
About Colin Johnston
I live in the North East of England and started photography in my 20’s using black and white 35mm roll film.
My first darkroom was a make shift temporary conversion of the bathroom, but when I started using a medium format view camera with 5x4 sheet film it was necessary to build a permanent darkroom.
In 2006 I bought a second-hand Nikon D2X camera and my entry into digital photography began, although I still prefer to hang black and white prints in my home.
Photography gets me outdoors in all weather, where I enjoy watching wildlife and being in the natural environment. I also enjoy the more technical challenge of low light night photography and astrophotography.
