About my photography

Thank you for visiting my website.

I live in the North East of England and started photography in my 20’s using black and white 35mm roll film. My first darkroom was a make shift temporary conversion of the bathroom, but when I started using a medium format view camera with 5x4 sheet film it was necessary to build a permanent darkroom. I took photography seriously for several years, but I was not very active during the early days of digital cameras and the arrival of Adobe Photoshop because I was preoccupied with my business and a young family.

In 2006 I bought a second-hand Nikon D2X camera and the passion resumed although it took me a while to start printing again due to ink jet printers producing prints that were nowhere near the quality of a silver halide print on rag paper. I still prefer black and white or mono toned images, and use gradient maps or fill layers in Photoshop to tone and colour grade.

I still use mostly Nikon equipment but I also use an astro modified Sony A7iii for nightscape and astro photography. My post processing is done on a Mac using Lightroom and Photoshop together with some plugins for better control of noise and sharpening. I use PTGui for panorama stitching, and for nightscapes I currently use Starry Landscape Stacker and Siril. I use a Canon printer for prints up to A2 size.

Photography gets me outdoors in all weather where I enjoy watching wildlife and being in the natural environment. I also enjoy the more technical challenge of low light night photography and astrophotography.
